Edward M. Tavel, Jr., MD
Medical Director
Edward M. Tavel, Jr., MD, is highly experienced and committed to providing excellent and compassionate care to our patients. He has been conducting clinical research as a Principal Investigator since 2007. He is board certified in anesthesia as well as pain medicine. Dr. Tavel also has a private practice, Pain Specialists of Charleston, PA, where he serves as medical director.
Dr. Tavel earned his undergraduate degree from Davidson College and his MD at the Medical University of South Carolina. He completed four additional years of anesthesia and pain medicine training at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, and was chief resident in his final year. He is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesia and the American Board of Pain Medicine. He maintains active membership in the Interventional Spinal Intervention Society (ISIS), as well as, the American Society of Interventional Pain Physicians (ASIPP).

Crystal Gutierrez
PA-C Certified Physician Assistant
Crystal Gutierrez is a certified physician assistant with Pain Research of Charleston. Originally from Louisiana, Ms. Gutierrez received a Bachelors degree in Biological Sciences from Louisiana State University and a Bachelors degree in Physician Assistant from Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center. She is a member of The American Academy of Physician Assistants. Ms. Gutierrez has years of experience in treating pain management patients.
Amanda McFann, MSN, NP-C
Certified Nurse Practitioner
Amanda is a Certified Nurse Practitioner with Pain Specialists of Charleston and Pain Research of Charleston. A Charleston Native, Amanda earned her Bachelor of Science in Biology from Presbyterian College and attended MUSC for her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in nursing. Amanda is a nationally accredited member of the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners and has over 6 years experience as an NP. When she is not practicing medicine, Amanda enjoys spending time with her family.
Alix Pommerenke, BA, CRC
Clinical Research Coordinator
Alix is a Clinical Research Coordinator for Pain Research of Charleston. A South Carolina Native, she graduated from Clemson University with a Bachelor of Arts in Biological Sciences & a Minor in Business Administration. Alix joined the research team as a Research Assistant but as her knowledge & experience has grown she has successfully moved into the Research Coordinator role. Prior to her joining the research team, Alix spent several months in Nairobi, Kenya volunteering at a children’s rescue center & developing a college scholarship program.
Geraldine Quiogue, BS
Clinical Research Coordinator
Geraldine is a Clinical Research Coordinator for Pain Research of Charleston. A Georgia Native, she graduated from the University of Georgia with a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry. As our Research Coordinator, Geraldine supports, facilitates and coordinates the daily clinical trial activities and plays a critical role in the conduct of the studies. Prior to joining the research team, Geraldine worked at the Medical University of South Carolina as a Research Specialist in photodynamic therapy on cancer cells.
Kimberly Argabright, BA, CRC
Clinical Research Coordinator
Kim is a Clinical Research Coordinator with Pain Research of Charleston. A North Carolina native, Kim brings expertise in both private practice and hospital site research to our practice. Prior to studying the field of pain management, Kim spent 6 years researching Gynecological Infectious Disease, Pulmonary, Cystic Fibrosis and Radiology.
